Magnific vs Native 4K Generation: When Should You Upscale?

For a new AI image whose target fits a supported native 4K preset, start at native resolution first. Use Magnific when the source already exists, the requested output exceeds the generator’s limits, or creative reinterpretation is part of the brief. The cost comparison depends on model, quality, plan utilization, credit charge, and output dimensions.

Freepik’s main platform became Magnific on April 28, 2026. Separately, the legacy Magnific service remains fully operational for existing subscribers and is closed to new sign-ups. This article keeps those products distinct and uses official pricing, API, and model pages reviewed July 14, 2026.

What changed when Freepik became Magnific?

The official rebrand announcement was published April 28, 2026 and states that Freepik became Magnific. That means Magnific is now the name of the former Freepik main platform, including its current creative suite, stock catalog, plans, and AI tools.

The rebrand did not remove the older service. The official legacy page says magnific.ai remains fully operational for existing users, with their gallery, remaining tokens, and subscription available. New registrations are closed on that service and go to the current platform.

For pricing, a new customer should use the current Magnific plan table. An existing legacy subscriber should use the billing information inside the retained legacy account. Mixing the two produces a comparison between different products and customer cohorts. When does native 4K remove an upscale step?

Native 4K removes a second enlargement step when the image is newly generated and the required output fits a model’s documented preset. Google’s image generation guide lists 4K output for Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro. The exact pixel dimensions depend on aspect ratio; a square 4K preset can reach 4096 by 4096 pixels.

Google’s current API pricing lists Nano Banana 2 image output at $0.151 for 4K and Nano Banana Pro at $0.24 for 4K. Prompt input, reference images, thinking or text output, and optional grounding can add charges. Those values therefore describe the image-output component, not an all-inclusive request total.

A native render and a creative upscale are not identical deliverables. Native generation asks the model to compose detail at the target resolution. Magnific Creative enlarges an existing image and can reinterpret detail. Cost is only one part of the decision; source identity, label fidelity, texture, and approval risk can matter more.

What does current cost math show?

Magnific’s live pricing comparison lists Nano Banana 2 at 75 credits for 1K. Its edit-tool credit page separately lists Magnific Creative at 360 credits for a 4K result in the Premium web-plan table. These figures describe public web-facing plan tables; they do not establish the debit for either API endpoint.

The Magnific API pricing documentation says every API call deducts credits, but the Magnific API documentation does not publish an exact per-call debit for Nano Banana 2 or Creative upscaling. Because the public API pages do not tie the web-plan figures to those endpoints, this article does not calculate a Magnific API amount from them. The two Google rows can be compared because Google publishes the relevant output prices. An exact Magnific API comparison requires the debit shown by a live account or a provider quote for the selected endpoints. The workflow decision still changes with the generator, source resolution, upscale mode, rerolls, and whether Creative’s altered detail is the intended result.

The pricing card advertises Premium as “Unlimited, all year,” while the credits guide and Unlimited guide exclude Premium from their documented Unlimited plan set. Those official pages conflict. Web app billing is not confirmed by the API documentation; web users should inspect the live account cost and Unlimited toggle before running the job.

What does Magnific’s current API documentation confirm?

The current Magnific API pricing page says every AI generation request made through the API deducts credits from the organization’s balance on each call, and the rule applies to every paid plan. Unlimited allowances apply only inside the Magnific web app; API calls always run on the credit model. It does not publish the exact debit for the generation and upscaling calls compared here, so a supportable API total requires live account data or a provider quote.

The Creative Upscaler endpoint documents 2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x scale factors. It also says the resulting image cannot exceed 25.3 million pixels. That evidence applies to the documented Creative endpoint. It does not prove that a separate Precision endpoint has identical scale factors, pixel limits, parameters, or billing.

When is Magnific useful after native 4K?

Magnific remains relevant in three common situations:

  • An existing photograph cannot be regenerated. A low-resolution archival portrait or discontinued product photo has no native-generation setting. An upscaler can enlarge that specific source, although every result still needs inspection.
  • The required deliverable exceeds the generator’s output. Large-format print, exhibition graphics, or a heavy crop can need more pixels than a model’s supported preset.
  • Creative reinterpretation is intentional. Magnific Creative can invent micro-detail. That can serve an illustrative treatment, but it can also alter faces, packaging, typography, product geometry, or texture.

When should you stay with native generation?

Start natively when the asset is new, the target size fits the model, and the generated composition is still open to change. One generation step reduces handoffs and makes reroll cost easier to measure. It also avoids asking an upscaler to repair a composition that should be regenerated.

Native output does not guarantee correctness. A 4096-pixel file can still contain incorrect text, geometry, branding, hands, or product details. For label-sensitive work, preserve the real label as an edited layer or tested reference workflow and inspect the result at delivery size. What should legacy Magnific subscribers do?

Existing subscribers can continue using the legacy service through its official access page. Their retained plan and token balance should be evaluated on the terms visible in that account, not against a current Magnific plan row. A new buyer cannot use that legacy signup path and should evaluate the current main platform instead.

This separation also changes support questions. “Magnific price” can refer to a retained legacy subscription, a current Magnific web plan, current web credits, or the Magnific API. Name the service and billing surface before comparing a number.
