There is no universal monthly crossover where an AI image API becomes cheaper or more expensive than a subscription. The answer changes with model, size, quality, edit inputs, rerolls, queue tolerance, and whether a Midjourney prompt’s four returned images are counted as one job or four files.
At 60 output-only generations, xAI Standard costs $1.20. GPT Image 2 medium at 1,024 square costs $3.1608 in output tokens. Midjourney Basic costs $10 for the month, while Standard costs $30 and adds unlimited Relax image mode. These figures are arithmetically comparable, but the outputs are not quality-equivalent deliverables.
All provider tables below were reviewed July 11, 2026. The method is to keep one unit in each calculation and disclose what the price excludes.
What does GPT Image 2 cost by size and quality?
OpenAI meters text input, image input, and image output. Its current API pricing is:
| Meter | Standard | Cached standard | Batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text input | $5.00 / 1M tokens | $1.25 / 1M tokens | $2.50 / 1M tokens |
| Image input | $8.00 / 1M tokens | $2.00 / 1M tokens | $4.00 / 1M tokens |
| Image output | $30.00 / 1M tokens | Not applicable | $15.00 / 1M tokens |
The OpenAI calculator produces the following output-only rows. Each dollar value equals output tokens multiplied by the Standard $30-per-million output rate. Prompt and edit-image inputs add to the request total.
| Requested size | Low tokens | Low output charge | Medium tokens | Medium output charge | High tokens | High output charge |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1024×1024 | 196 | $0.00588 | 1,756 | $0.05268 | 7,024 | $0.21072 |
| 1024×1536 | 158 | $0.00474 | 1,372 | $0.04116 | 5,488 | $0.16464 |
| 2048×2048 | 397 | $0.01191 | 3,568 | $0.10704 | 14,272 | $0.42816 |
| 2048×1152 | 157 | $0.00471 | 1,413 | $0.04239 | 5,650 | $0.16950 |
| 3840×2160 | 371 | $0.01113 | 3,336 | $0.10008 | 13,342 | $0.40026 |
For 60 medium outputs, the output-only arithmetic is:
- 1,024 by 1,024:
60 × $0.05268 = $3.1608; - 2,048 by 2,048:
60 × $0.10704 = $6.4224; - 3,840 by 2,160:
60 × $0.10008 = $6.0048.
The non-square 3,840 by 2,160 request costs less in output tokens than the 2,048-square request at the same quality. That is why a generic low, medium, or high price without dimensions is incomplete.

What do xAI Grok outputs and edits cost?
xAI documents $0.020 output and $0.002 per image input for grok-imagine-image. It documents $0.050 at 1K, $0.070 at 2K, and $0.010 per image input for grok-imagine-image-quality.
Grok Standard and Grok Quality are short labels used in this article, not official xAI model IDs.
| Model / resolution | Article short label | Output charge | Each input image | One-input edit | Three-input edit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| grok-imagine-image / 1K | Grok Standard | $0.020 | $0.002 | $0.022 | $0.026 |
| grok-imagine-image / 2K | Grok Standard | $0.020 | $0.002 | $0.022 | $0.026 |
| grok-imagine-image-quality / 1K | Grok Quality | $0.050 | $0.010 | $0.060 | $0.080 |
| grok-imagine-image-quality / 2K | Grok Quality | $0.070 | $0.010 | $0.080 | $0.100 |
xAI’s multi-image guide allows up to three source images. A reference-driven edit therefore needs both output and input-image charges in the estimate. For 60 three-input Quality edits at 2K, the calculation is 60 × $0.100 = $6.00, not 60 × $0.070 = $4.20.
What do current Midjourney plans include?
The official plan comparison lists these US prices and features as reviewed July 11, 2026.
| Plan | Monthly price | Annual commitment | Fast GPU time | Relax image mode | Stealth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | $96/year ($8/mo) | 3.3 hr (200 min) | No | No |
| Standard | $30 | $288/year ($24/mo) | 15 hr | Unlimited images | No |
| Pro | $60 | $576/year ($48/mo) | 30 hr | Unlimited images and SD video | Yes |
| Mega | $120 | $1,152/year ($96/mo) | 60 hr | Unlimited images and SD video | Yes |
Midjourney prices access and GPU time rather than publishing one fixed per-image fee. Standard, Pro, and Mega include unlimited image generations in Relax mode, but a queued request and a metered Fast request are different service conditions.
Why are Midjourney jobs not the same as images?
Midjourney’s GPU guide says one SD prompt job returns a set of four images and uses about 0.8 Fast GPU minute. One HD prompt job returns four images and uses about 1.3 minutes.
| Returned grid images | Prompt jobs | SD Fast minutes | HD Fast minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 grid images | 15 | 12.0 | 19.5 |
| 300 grid images | 75 | 60.0 | 97.5 |
| 1,500 grid images | 375 | 300.0 | 487.5 |
A Midjourney grid image is not automatically equivalent to one API output. A four-image grid can be an exploration set, while an API edit may be one targeted revision with input images. The table converts units; it does not claim equal usefulness or quality.
Basic includes 200 Fast minutes. At the documented SD rate, that is a theoretical 250 four-image prompt jobs, or about 1,000 returned grid images, before variations, upscales, nonstandard jobs, and other GPU use. The old idea that 300 returned images exceed a roughly 200-job cap confuses returned images with jobs. A side-by-side of the two access models, including what a returned grid actually buys, is in Midjourney vs API image models for Photoshop.
Does ChatGPT Plus replace API billing?
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus help article lists Plus at $20 per month, includes image generation, and says API usage is separate and billed independently. It also says account limits can vary with system conditions.
Use Plus as a bundled consumer subscription if its current account limits and workflow fit. Do not insert an undocumented fixed image quota into a production cost forecast.
Which billing model fits a Photoshop workflow?
Bielfor workflow judgment, not a provider claim: usage billing is easier to justify for irregular, targeted Photoshop edits because each provider request can be tied to a layer or revision. Midjourney Standard can be cost-efficient for sustained visual exploration when Relax queues are acceptable. This is a routing recommendation from Bielfor, not a universal cost ranking.
Usage billing and a monthly subscription are not the only two shapes. A one-time license with no recurring platform fee moves the recurring cost entirely into provider usage, and the tools that currently qualify are listed with their license terms in pay-once AI tools in 2026.
Use this worksheet:
- Count generated outputs, prompt jobs, accepted deliverables, and edit inputs separately for one representative week.
- For xAI, multiply outputs by the resolution-specific output rate and add every source-image charge.
- For GPT Image 2, record requested dimensions and quality, then add text input, image input, and image output.
- For Midjourney, convert returned grid images to prompt jobs before estimating Fast minutes.
- Add the value of queue time, file transfer, rerolls, and retouching instead of comparing provider charges alone.
Bielfor builds Creator MAX, a Photoshop panel for provider API models. That ownership can influence the workflow preference, so all price claims above link directly to provider documentation. Midjourney’s Community Guidelines state that it does not provide an API and prohibits unauthorized automation, which makes Midjourney a subscription workflow rather than a direct API row in this calculation.
FAQ
Is an AI image API cheaper than Midjourney?
It depends on the exact workload. Sixty xAI Standard outputs cost $1.20 before any input images, while Midjourney Basic costs $10 for a month. A large high-quality GPT Image 2 edit can cost much more per request, and Midjourney Standard includes unlimited Relax images. Compare the intended model, size, quality, inputs, and queue mode.
At what monthly image count should I switch to a subscription?
There is no provider-independent image count. Calculate the selected model and request shape, then compare that result with the plan and mode you would actually use. Count Midjourney jobs and returned grid images separately.
Why is GPT Image 2 shown at several prices?
Its output tokens depend on quality, dimensions, and aspect ratio. Text prompts and image inputs add separate token charges. A single flat price would hide those variables.
Does a Midjourney prompt produce one image?
The documented SD and HD prompt rows each return a set of four images. Variations, upscales, and other tasks can use additional GPU time.
Does Creator MAX change provider prices?
Creator MAX is the interface Bielfor builds. Provider usage is billed on the user’s provider account. Verify the current product terms separately from the OpenAI, xAI, and Midjourney rates in this article.
